Learning in Science explores some recent findings of research into students' ideas in science, discusses their significance for the teacher, and suggests solutions to problems identified. The book was written mainly for practicing teachers and for use in pre-service and in-service teacher education.

Throughout the book, several examples of students' ideas are included relating to a variety of topics such as air; particulate nature of matter; chemical change; chemical reactions; evaporation and condensation; dissolving; forces and motion; gravity; light; animals and plants; rocks and soil. Although the book's focus has been students' ideas at ages 10-15, its implications are relevant for teaching and learning science at all grade levels.

The book also includes appendices with helpful guidelines on conducting interviews and constructing surveys that assess students' understanding.
