Presenter: The purpose of this activity is to share with you
the goals that have shaped the design of the workshop. Today’s workshop
is designed to demonstrate that
-
Science educators need a coherent set of K-12 learning goals.
-
Project 2061 provides a set of science literacy goals in Science
for All Americans and a set of learning goals in Benchmarks for
Science Literacy. (Science literacy is broadly defined to include natural
and social science, mathematics, and technology. Science for All Americans
provides a set of science literacy goals for all high school
graduates. Benchmarks provides a set of learning goals for the ends
of grades 2, 5, 8, and 12.)
-
Project 2061’s learning goals are only a threshold of learning for all
students.
-
SFAA presents the knowledge and skills that make up science literacy.
-
Benchmarks complements the National Research Council’s National
Science Education Standards (NSES) and the standards of the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The comparison of these documents that
Project 2061 has prepared can help you gauge how well a state or district
framework addresses national science literacy goals or can guide the development
of such a framework.
During the workshop you will have opportunities to study the comparisons
and use them to guide the analysis of your own framework.
Draw attention to the workshop agenda. Briefly describe how each agenda
item should contribute to the goals.
