Presenter: The purpose of this activity is to determine what we may already know about Project 2061 tools for science literacy. What comes to your mind when you hear Project 2061, Science for All Americans, and Benchmarks for Science Literacy?

As participants share descriptors, record their responses on a blank transparency.

Again show TRANSPARENCY: Characteristics of Project 2061 - page 1 and overlay it with page 2.

Presenter: Here are some descriptors that Project 2061 associates with its reform vision: long term; literacy in science, mathematics, and technology; ALL Americans; K-12; goal oriented; less is better. 

Develop briefly each of these characteristics, for example:

• Project 2061 does not offer a quick fix.
• Project 2061 expands the definition of science.
• Science literacy is for all students, not only those electing science careers.
• Reform must be structured around powerful, meaningful goals.
• Project 2061 recommends covering less material but at greater depth.
