In the jigsaw or expert groups strategy, participants leave their "home" groups and meet with the participants from other groups who have been assigned the same study topic. After completing the assigned study tasks in their "expert" groups, participants return "home" to share what they have learned with the other members of their original groups.

For example, the workshop might have five small groups. Study task A would be assigned to only one member of each small group. These five people would leave their home groups and meet as a new, "expert" group. After completing their study, they would return to their original group to report what they had learned.
