Overview: This presentation shows how benchmarks related to a
topic can be identified and linked to show the K-12 development of understanding
of the topic. The activity is a worthwhile investment of time for groups
who will be working extensively with Science for All Americans and
Benchmarks for Science Literacy. Starting with the K-12 list of
benchmarks from an assigned section, participants highlight benchmarks
and parts of benchmarks that relate to the development of concepts within
a particular topic. Next they examine a strand map on the topic to understand
how benchmarks in it are related to each other. Then they construct a strand
map on an assigned topic and compare it to a Project 2061 strand map on
that topic in Benchmarks on Disk. Finally, they choose a new topic,
identify related benchmarks, and draw a strand map that shows how particular
benchmarks in their collection are related.
