To Analyze Curriculum Materials, Option B:
Science Place: Air, Sun, and Water

Estimated Time: 5 hours.

Overview: Participants use Science for All Americans, Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and a specially developed analysis procedure to evaluate how well Air, Sun, and Water, a first grade curriculum module, addresses science literacy goals specified in Benchmarks for Science Literacy. Participants examine three lessons (10, 11, and 12), which address the concepts of evaporation, condensation, and the water cycle. Students discuss water as a major part of the weather, observe and discuss experiences of things drying out, and observe and discuss different rates of evaporation. Air, Sun, and Water is part of the series Science Place developed by Scholastic, Inc., in cooperation with the Franklin Institute. In addition to the presentation materials, background readings for the workshop leader are provided.
