To Analyze Instruction,
Option E:
Instruction Aimed at Benchmark 1A, The Scientific
World View (3-5)#1
Estimated Time: 3.5 hours.
Overview: Participants study parts of Science for All Americans
and Benchmarks for Science to enhance their understanding of
the intent of Benchmark 1A Scientific World View (3-5)#1:
Results of similar scientific investigations seldom turn out exactly
the same. Sometimes this is because of unexpected differences in the things
being investigated, sometimes because of unrealized differences in the
methods used or in the circumstances in which the investigation is carried
out, and sometimes just because of uncertainties in observations. It is
not always easy to tell which.
Participants then read several scenarios describing instruction and evaluate
how effectively the instruction addresses the benchmark. If time permits,
participants consider how the instruction could be improved to address
the benchmark more effectively.
This option is appropriate for K-12 teachers from different science
disciplines. The scenarios give participants an opportunity to apply their
understanding of the benchmark to analyzing and improving instruction.
However, because teachers may be more familiar with the traditional science
topics in Options A-D, this option on The Scientific World View section
of Benchmarks might best serve as a second case, after a group has
analyzed instruction using one of the other options.
