Need for Change, Option A:
Video on Astronomy Misconceptions

Estimated Time: 8-20 minutes (depending upon how much of the videotape is shown).

Overview: The videotape A Private Universe qvideo.rtf shows interviews with Harvard graduates about why we have seasons. It illustrates the extent of science illiteracy among even the reputedly best educated people in the United States. If time is available, a series of interviews with a bright 9th grader can also be used to show how difficult it is to teach this seemingly simple topic. This option is particularly appropriate for workshops that focus on topics related to The Earth section of Science for All Americans and Benchmarks for Science Literacy, but can be used in any workshop as long as participants themselves understand the science concept.
