Life Science: Organisms and their environments Grades K-4, page 129 An organism's patterns of behavior are related to the nature of that
organism's environment, including the kinds and numbers of other organisms
present, the availability of food and resources, and the physical characteristics
of the environment. When the environment changes, some plants and animals
survive and reproduce, and others die or move to new locations.

Benchmark 5D The Living Environment:
Interdependence of Life
Grades 3-5, page 116
Changes in an organism's habitat are sometimes beneficial to it and
sometimes harmful.
Benchmark 5D The Living Environment:
Interdependence of Life
Grades 6-8, page 117
In all environments--freshwater, marine, forest, desert, grassland,
mountain, and others--organisms with similar needs may compete with one
another for resources, including food, space, water, air, and shelter.
In any particular environment, the growth and survival of organisms depend
on the physical conditions.
Benchmark 5F The Living Environment:
Evolution of Life
Grades 6-8, page 124
Individual organisms with certain traits are more likely than others
to survive and have offspring. Changes in environmental conditions can
affect the survival of individual organisms and entire species.
