Science in Personal and Social Perspectives: Science and technology in society
Grades 5-8, page 169

Science influences society through its knowledge and world view. Scientific knowledge and the procedures used by scientists influence the way many individuals in society think about themselves, others, and the environment. The effect of science on society is neither entirely beneficial nor entirely detrimental. Societal challenges often inspire questions for scientific research, and social priorities often influence research priorities through the availability of funding for research.

Funding influences the direction of science by virtue of the decisions that are made on which research to support. Research funding comes from various federal government agencies, industry, and private foundations.

Benchmark 3A The Nature of Technology: Technology and Science
Grades 9-12, page 47
Technology usually affects society more directly than science because it solves practical problems and serves human needs (and may create new problems and needs). In contrast, science affects society mainly by stimulating and satisfying people's curiosity and occasionally by enlarging or challenging their views of what the world is like.
