NSES Content Standard C
Life Science: Populations and ecosystems Grades 5-8, page 158 The number of organisms an ecosystem can support depends on the resources
available and abiotic factors, such as quantity of light and water, range
of temperatures, and soil composition. Given adequate biotic and abiotic
resources and no disease or predators, populations (including humans) increase
at rapid rates. Lack of resources and other factors, such as predation
and climate, limit the growth of populations in specific niches in the
ecosystem.

Benchmark 5E The Living Environment:
Flow of Matter and Energy
Grades 9-12, page 121
The amount of life any environment can support is limited by the available
energy, water, oxygen, and minerals, and by the ability of ecosystems to
recycle the residue of dead organic materials. Human activities and technology
can change the flow and reduce the fertility of the land.
