NSES Content Standard A
Science as Inquiry: Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry Grades 5-8, page 145 Use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret
data. The use of tools and techniques, including mathematics, will be guided
by the question asked and the investigations students design. The use of
computers for the collection, summary, and display of evidence is part
of this standard. Students should be able to access, gather, store, retrieve,
and organize data, using hardware and software designed for these uses.

Benchmark 3A The Nature of Technology:
Technology and Science
Grades 3-5, page 45
Technology enables scientists and others to observe things that are
too small or too far away to be seen without them and to study the motion
of objects that are moving very rapidly or are hardly moving at all.
Benchmark 3A The Nature of Technology:
Technology and Science
Grades 3-5, page 45
Measuring instruments can be used to gather accurate information for
making scientific comparisons of objects and events and for designing and
constructing things that will work properly.
Benchmark 3A The Nature of Technology:
Technology and Science
Grades 6-8, page 46
Technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer
space and other remote locations, sample collection and treatment, measurement,
data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information.
Benchmark 12B Habits of Mind: Computation
and Estimation
Grades 6-8, page 291
Insert instructions into computer spreadsheet cells to program arithmetic
calculations.
Benchmark 12C Habits of Mind: Manipulation
and Observation
Grades 6-8, page 294
Use calculators to compare amounts proportionally.
Benchmark 12C Habits of Mind: Manipulation
and Observation
Grades 6-8, page 294
Use computers to store and retrieve information in topical, alphabetical,
numerical, and key-word files, and create simple files of their own devising.
Benchmark 12C Habits of Mind: Manipulation
and Observation
Grades 6-8, page 294
Read analog and digital meters on instruments used to make direct measurements
of length, volume, weight, elapsed time, rates, and temperature, and choose
appropriate units for reporting various magnitudes.
Benchmark 12C Habits of Mind: Manipulation
and Observation
Grades 6-8, page 294
Use cameras and tape recorders for capturing information.
Benchmark 12D Habits of Mind: Communication
Skills
Grades 6-8, page 297
Locate information in reference books, back issues of newspapers and
magazines, compact disks, and computer databases.
