Blueprints for Reform was developed with the effort and advice of hundreds of people representing every aspect of the education system, and beyond. It is meant  to suggest how systemic reform can support the vision of science literacy put forth by Science for All Americans. Although not everyone's idea of a "blueprint for reform" may be represented by the book, sketching how all parts of the system might work together toward science literacy should be a real and significant goal for reformers. The current version of Blueprints is a small step toward that goal, representing an attempt at synthesizing ideas from the many contributors, but not implying their agreement or endorsement. The institutions listed are the affiliations at the time of the contribution.

Project 2061 Staff

As with other Project 2061 publications, Blueprints is a collaborative effort of the staff, whose contributions are acknowledged and appreciated. Gerald Kulm directed the final phase, completing the current version of the book and online publication.

Coordinators, Contributors, Advisors

Project 2061 commissioned experts to prepare reports on each of the twelve Blueprints topics. Most coordinators formed committees which developed background papers that the coordinator incorporated into a synthesized report. In some cases, advisors were consulted by the coordinators and, for some reports, a team of authors worked to develop the report. The thoughtful work by these coordinators and their teams is acknowledged in providing the foundation for the current Blueprints book.

Blueprints Report Reviewers

The draft Blueprints Reports were reviewed externally by experts in each of the twelve topics. In addition, the other Blueprints coordinators reviewed the drafts and identified issues from their own areas that were related to the report. Project 2061 staff summarized the suggestions and comments from reviewers and coordinators, then forwarded them to the Blueprint coordinator to incorporate into the final Blueprints Report. The contributions by these experts was an important component in the producing the reports.

Consultants

Michael Kirst, Stanford University, and Steve Schneider, Woodside Research Consortium, were commissioned to prepare summaries of the Blueprints Reports, to assist Project 2061staff in developing chapter-length syntheses of the topics. Ron Havelock and Michael Huberman, Knowledge Transfer Institute, were commissioned to prepare a paper discussing the Blueprints user audience and recommendations for connecting the work to other Project 2061 efforts. Both of these efforts were valuable in focusing the Blueprints efforts and synthesizing important ideas from the reports.

Chapter Reviews

Project 2061 staff edited the summaries of the reports in an attempt to add consistency in format and language, producing drafts of the current Blueprints chapters. These drafts were sent for review to hundreds of people, representing a broad spectrum of the educational, scientific, business, and client community. Many reviewers expressed their reactions via telephone or email. Some reviews were formal and written; others were informal suggestions. All of them were valuable in sensing reactions to Blueprints ideas and in preparing revisions to the summary papers.

Review Conferences

During the summer of 1996, three working meetings were held to provide input to Project 2061 staff in interpreting outside reviews, looking a cross-cutting themes, and making suggestions for future work. Each conference included coordinators or others who wrote the original Blueprints Reports, along with representatives of potential audiences in states and schools. The following participants in the working meetings gave the important final impetus to completing the book.

So many people have been involved with the preparation of Blueprints that it is nearly impossible to make a comprehensive and accurate list. We apologize to those who have not been mentioned and acknowledge the continuing encouragement of the supporters of Project 2061 who have contributed in many ways to this work.
